| "If you like Tenacious D, you will LIKE Trainwreck." - Jack Black |
| _________________________________________________________ 9.10.06 Joe: So what's new? Kyle: We’re just wrapping up the D movie, putting the finishing touches on. We’re screening it for the first time complete next Sunday for the international Epic workers in New York... for all the people working on the record. I just saw it a couple days ago, it’s gonna be great Joe. You’re gonna love it. Joe: I heard a rumor that you guys were working with John K (the creator of Ren and Stimpy and the Fuck Her Gently video) again? Kyle: We’re doing a couple cartoons with him. We did one to open the movie and we’re doing another cartoon music video. Joe: Which song is the video for? Kyle: It’s called Classiico. It’s a song that Jack and I jam when we first meet each other. Joe: What other films would you compare the Pick of Destiny to? Kyle: Citizen Kane, Apocalypse Now... and Singing in the Rain. Joe: I saw you were sporting the Trainwreck shirt the whole way through the movie trailer... Kyle: It’s my cousin Klip’s band and he wanted it to be in the movie... what are you gonna do? Klip’s a shameless promoter, not me. Joe: I also heard there’s going to be a song from Trainwreck on the soundtrack? Kyle: There is, we actually got a few songs on there. John Bartholomew Shredman... a couple licks from that, a little background of I Wanna Know is playing in the coffee shop scene, and somewhere in the movie Caveman’s playing. I don’t even know where. Joe: Now that you’ve finished the Trainwreck EP are you planning on following it up with a full length album? Kyle: Yeah the EP was just a little taste. As soon as we’re back on track we’ll finish it up. Joe: Is it official that Lance Branson is no longer with the band? Kyle: Well Lance is here with us in spirit of course, but he has a lot of stuff going on, so we’re taking a hiatus. Joe: You and Lance were recently working together on his play Rock of Ages, was it cool getting back to your theater roots? Kyle: That was a blast. They’re actually gonna do it in New York next spring. Joe: Are you gonna travel out there and do that one too? Kyle: I don’t know. He wants me to and I’m flattered, but theater is a lot of work, we’ll see. But it’ll be great with or without me [pauses] Okay, it won’t be as great without me, but they’re still gonna do it and it’ll be decent. Joe: So as far as Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, I’ve heard Trainwreck might play the release party? Kyle: I came up with that brainstorm and haven’t been able to let it go. It just seems like too much fun. For those lucky enough to get a ticket, my God. In fact, Joe if you’re willing to fly yourself out and get a place to stay, I will invite you personally. See what you can do. We’re talking red carpet, we’re talking paparazzi, we’re talking the gliteratti, and the Trainwreck audi. We’ll need you there to report on the happenings. Joe: Count me in man. How long has the D movie been on the drawing board now? Kyle: We first got the idea around 2000, and we’ve been kinda working on and off ever since. So its been five years now... we serve no D wine before it’s D time. Joe: Another key anniversary just passed, Trainwreck’s been playing for four years now... Kyle: Four years? Man what a ride it’s been. We’re goin stronger than ever. We’re gonna be going out on the road pretty soon here. Are you coming out to see us? Joe: Hell yeah man, the Chicago show is on my birthday. Kyle: Well I’m gonna call it Joe night. I believe that every other song will be dedicated to you. Joe: Sweet! In addtion to the Trainwreck tour, I’ve heard the D’s gonna be hitting the road to promote the movie, do you know what the plans are for that? Kyle: Somebody does, I don’t. I think we’re touring the United States in November and December, and then I think we go to England at some point. It’s gonna be huge. Joe: Now that Jack’s married with a kid do you think it’s gonna change life on the road for you guys? Kyle: Not for me! It might for him. Joe: With the D movie as big as it’s gonna be, are you worried to take the band main stream... having everyone know who you are? Kyle: It seems like a lot of people already know my name. I think it’ll just be an extension of what its like now. I’m well trained in handling fans. I say thank you... go see the movie... would you like a picture? Joe: I’ve heard you’ve been kind of settling down a bit, cutting back on the drug use and getting in shape? Kyle: It’s an ongoing battle. I’m in a very intense fitness regime. I’m calling it my Nicole Richie red carpet diet. I want to look good for the premier. Joe: Is there gonna be a KG diet product line coming up in the future? Kyle: Yes, there’s gonna be a book, video, and probably a tour. If I can do it Joe, IF I can do it. One day at a time, and right now I gotta avoid the donuts at Starbucks, and I gotta avoid the QP with cheese. One day at a time my friend. Joe: With all this happening with the D, what’s going to happen with Trainwreck? Kyle: I sort of planning on going leap frog. As long as the D is rocking I’ll probably be rocking with the D. And then playing with the Wreck in between. Shreddy, Boy Johnny and JR are coming with us too. So we might sneak in some Trainwreck shows on the D tour.. Joe: Do you know who the drummer will be? Kyle: Brooks Wackerman from Bad Religion... awesome drummer. Joe: As far as taking the D from acoustic to having a full band, do you think that takes away from the purity of it at all? Kyle: It’s definitely a risk. But half the show will just be acoustic, you’ll get both flavors. We’re trying it a little different this time. Artists need to reinvent Joe. Joe: So are you looking forward to getting the Wreck back on the road again? Kyle: Yeah, we had to cut the last one a little short, but it was going great. So yeah, we’ll hit them hard. Joe: I’m seriously hooked on Rock, Boulder, Mountain... was there any apprehension about bringing a flute into a rock show? Kyle: No, all the colors of the rainbow are welcome. I love the flute. I don’t think you want to put it in every song, but wherever it’s needed. I’d like to throw it into a song or two more. Joe: Do you have any new songs you’ll be unveiling this on a tour? Kyle: We have a new one we’re cooking up in the laboratory. It’s kind of in the stonesy Trainwreck vein. Joe: Do you have any other projects coming up? Kyle: I’ve got a new movie coming up called Wild Hogs with John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy and Marisa Tomei. Its probably gonna be my finest performance ever. I play a small town, out of control karaoke singer. It’s probably premature, but I’m thinking Oscar. Joe: Through your career you’ve met a lot of people, was there anyone that made you flip out? Kyle: I usually play it close to the vest and try to remain calm, but Neil Young was pretty cool. He’s kind of a hero. I met him at a party at his house. It was crazy... James Taylor and Kyle York, everybody was there. But you know, we all put our pants on one leg at a time. Even the queen takes a shit. Joe: Any last words for the fans? Kyle: Prepare yourself fans. We will explode your brain, and strap your nuts to your leg. That’s right. We’re coming out, your faces will be melted into a gooey bowl of rock jelly. I love you, God speed and we’ll see you out on the road. |
