Empirical Labs announces BIG FrEQ v1.3 – Music Connection Magazine

Designer and manufacturer/producer of professional audio signal processing equipment plug-ins Empirical Labs Inc. (ELI) announced the availability of BIG FrEQ v1.3 – elevating its inaugural EQ plug-in inspired by its much-loved Lil FrEQ precision and warmth of hardware tuning with a welcome update bolstered by many new additions and improvements, including AAX-DSP and VENUE (S6L) support, the latter notably playing a part in increasing the base of plug-in users by integrating it with live sound arena — starting September 7.

The company’s press release explains:

With no less than 12 powerful processing sections to its appropriate name, BIG FrEQ should handle all tonal and spectral shaping needs for single tracks, as well as busses, on its own, including use as a versatile mastering tool. Like always, ELI he himself set out to bring new features and creative twists to plug-in EQs with his first release, having worked long and hard to make it easy to learn and fun to use.

But above all, BIG FrEQ is hugely useful, obviously, offering the ability to create modern “flat” EQ curves with an analog workflow and additional controls for more tone-shaping possibilities than an EQ plug-in typical. In other words: each of the six parametric bands has an additional value SLOPE control that flattens the shape of the EQ and captures more frequencies evenly, while enabling focus (F) allows users to fine-tune the frequency – centering the selected frequency and narrowing the range of FREQ (frequency) — to hear exactly which frequencies are affected with the simultaneously switchable solo (S) available on each parametric band. Elsewhere, each parametric section GAIN The knob can be extended from ±15dB to ±30dB with the range (R), while parametric section parameters can be uniquely copied and pasted from one to another to quickly move and duplicate bands, facilitating faster operation. In addition to this, the only FINISHER adds warmth to any track with organic saturation and allows up to 8x oversampling (tested up to 768kHz).

Other features also worth highlighting: pass hi and Col de Lo filters with adjustable Q and filter controls selectable from 6dB at 96dB (per octave); Lo shelf – soft bass boost or cut, centered around 120 Hz – and complementary hi shelf controls; LENGHT slider – controls bandwidth or, conversely, Q; and master PHASE switch — reverses the phase of the audio.

Additionally, a modern spectral display shows the cumulative shape of the EQ along with individual colored bands, while the built-in preset management system (with a proprietary preset format for cross-DAW preset access), a smooth automation of all parameters, direct input available for all parameters (by double-clicking any parameter to enter a value), uncoupled stereo version for dual mono operation, and the ability to bypass any which section (to monitor changes and release processing) complete BIG FrEQfattened ™ features.

On the tracks of exciting ELIthe first foray into the software arena as a single Distress– derivative compressor plug-in, produced by the creators of the award-winning hardware Distress himself, BIG FrEQ is another fine example of how the designer and manufacturer/producer of professional audio signal processing equipment plug-ins brings the quality of hardware sound to its software products and continues to offer things that cannot be made in the field of hardware to the mix in the box. Make room in any plugin collection for BIG FrEQ is to see and hear what it can do when it single-handedly handles all tonal and spectral shaping needs for single tracks, as well as busses, including use as a versatile mastering tool .

That said, the update BIG FrEQ to status v1.3 sees ELI elevating his inaugural EQ plug-in inspired by his much-loved Lil FrEQ precision and warmth of hardware tuning with many additions and improvements including AAX-DSP and VENUE (S6L) support, the latter notably playing a role in increasing the plug-in’s user base online introducing you to the arena of live sound. In addition, BIG FrEQ v1.3 boasts improved CPU (Central Processing Unit) utilization on macOS and Windows and all popular platforms, added A B comparison functionality, as well as improvements to the factory Presets… menu, which improves ELI-experienced with added to safeguard and Save as options for the current presets or settings, while any preset name is in italic if any changes have been made to the preset itself. Indeed, some of these additions and improvements can be seen in BIG FrEQ v1.3’s updated Graphical User Interface (GUI) remains as pleasing to the eye as it is to use.

Being bolstered by many new additions and improvements, it is therefore fair to say that the immense usefulness of BIG FrEQ has also been improved, itself a reflection of the designer and manufacturer/producer of professional audio signal processing equipment plug-ins who devotes hours to making things even easier to learn – not to mention fun to use! After all, the word empirical — in its most positive interpretation — means fashioned from experience.
