Elton John is as well known for his eclectic style as he is for his music. Since rising to fame in 1969 following the success of his breakthrough album empty sky, John (AKA Reginald Kenneth Dwight) rocked more iconic lusts than you could shake a tambourine. The ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ superstar wowed in everything from dazzling, sequined and flared jumpsuits to high-shine Versace satin suits.
Then, of course, there’s the iconic Bob Mackie-designed crystal-embellished baseball costume he wore on stage at Dodgers Stadium in 1976, which Harry Styles replicated for Halloween in 2018.
It’s surprising that Palace Skateboards is teaming up with the 74-year-old star for a capsule collection that pays homage to her famous wardrobe. In fact, it makes perfect sense. London-based Palace, which is overseen by its founder Lev Tanju, has a penchant for collaborating with musicians and bands, including Happy Mondays in 2020 and Whitney Houston (via her estate) in 2021.
The capsule collection, which was actually designed in collaboration with the singer, includes pieces that reference different moments in John’s career. There’s a velor tracksuit with a Palace Triferg leaf that nods to the retro Gucci numbers we’ve seen him wear in recent years, while there’s a series of t-shirts that feature a graphic of John in his cut. iconic blue and white ’76 Dodgers Stadium. .
Elsewhere, there’s a T-shirt that could be legitimate EJ tour merch that bears the name of his 1974 single “The Bitch Is Back” and the names of cities like London and Los Angeles. Perhaps the star piece of the collection is a chunky monochrome knit embroidered with John’s face, for the super fans.
