Vettai, which translates to “The Hunt”, was first created in 2010 and immediately garnered huge support with audiences spread across Singapore and Malaysia. At the Pradhana Vizha Awards, the show won 4 awards (including Best Actor for Shabir’s performance as Nantha). Since debuting on Netflix last year, the series has seen a resurgence in popularity with a wider regional audience.
Although the show was a huge hit, it was the theme song that really pushed him over the edge. Rather than acting as filler for the show’s intro, the track shook up the local soundtrack industry as well as the Tamil television industry. Fans can’t get enough of it! It became so successful that it was pirated and sold in Johor Bahru.
Alongside Shabir, two artists lend their voices to the song. The first would be Eugenia Yip of Singaporean jazz-funk band The Steve McQueens with her haunting, ethereal vocals. After switching to a heart-pounding EDM beat, Yogi B, the godfather of Tamil rap, arrives with his explosive lyrics to show off his mastery of cadence and flow.
25-year-old producer Buvan was only 10 when he heard the first soundtrack when it was released. As a huge fan of the soundtrack and the series, he had to calm his nerves and give his best for the theme song. knowing that the series has a huge fan base and the responsibility of meeting everyone’s expectations also rests on its shoulders.
Shabir is a multi-award winning singer-songwriter and composer. He has worked prolifically in the Tamil film industry with seven films in his repertoire. He was one of the first musical artists to lead the international Tamil independent music movement and is highly regarded as one of Singapore’s most prolific musical artists and has released numerous albums which have won him a loyal following in Singapore , India and Malaysia.
Buvan might be a new face in the music industry but has a wealth of experience as he has been producing songs and film scores in the Singaporean and Indian film industry since 2016. As someone who prefers to stay behind the scenes, he is known for his work having written title songs and scores for various Mediacorp TV series including Thilaanaa (2019) and Tekan Minyak 2 (2020), with its theme song nominated for the Pesta Award Perdana for best theme song in 2021.
