ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, USA, May 12, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — On May 13, Justin Kniest (JUST) released his debut album “Deep Cycles”. A melancholy journey through the furrows of sadness, loss and hope.

Justin Kniest (1969) is no stranger to the Dutch music scene. As producer of the Dutch Battle of the Bands, booker at Paradiso Amsterdam and founder of Fabchannel – online concerts, he has devoted much of his career to promoting new music. The fact that he plays several instruments, sings and writes songs that he kept to himself. Years of exposure to quality music at Paradiso Amsterdam had raised the bar to a chilling level.

Everything changed in 2019 when Justin wrote and performed two sad, melancholic and painfully personal songs during a songwriter bootcamp in Spain. The strong emotional reaction to his songs pushed him to take center stage. He recorded both songs in his home studio and released them under the name JUST. Both songs were played on Dutch national radio and have been streamed over 40,000 times on Spotify.

In early 2020, Justin decided that his debut album should be produced by Minco Eggersman (UNIFONY, ME, At The Close of Every Day). Eggersman is a well-known producer and international soundtrack composer who has proven to know the world of melancholy music and show the brokenness through beautiful musical textures.

Together they started working on the first demos and after a short period of time arranger René de Vries and engineer/mixer Theodoor Borger (UNIFONY) joined the team. JUST was beginning to find its final shape. Great songs followed and the rest of 2020 and the first half of 2021 were filled with the production of JUST’s debut album “Deep Cycles”.

Transparent, sincere, melancholy: only a few terms come to mind when listening to the music of JUST. You immediately recognize the quality of the songwriting and recording from the late 80s and early 90s. The depth of the recordings and mixes are unparalleled and sometimes remind you of bands like Talk Talk. On the song side, it’s a mixture of the song structures used by Mike Lindup and David Sylvian, but these songs certainly deserve their place between the works of more current songwriters like Thomas Dybdahl and Emmet Tinley.

All in all, the music of JUST comes to life thanks to the excellent performances of the participating artists. Justin plays guitar, bass and piano. Minco plays drums. Renowned German session guitarist Lothar Kosse (Nir Z., the Bissionette brothers, Abraham Laborial) added his typical “swell” guitar sounds to the tracks to create some lovely wordy textures. Keyboardist Stephen Smith (ABC, Dire Straits) played Hammond on several tracks.

The album cover was created by James Marsh who also designed the iconic Talk Talk albums. Finally, the photographer Maarten Corbijn has taken superb black and white photos that accompany the music of JUST.

Upon its first digital release in October 2021, “Deep Cycles” received critical acclaim from music industry heavyweights as well as the press. The first singles racked up over 100,000 plays on Spotify.

“’Deep Cycles’ sounds great! Love the vocals, drum sound and textures” – Phill Brown (Talk Talk engineer/mixer, David Bowie, Pink Floyd)

“This is possibly the most impeccably produced and executed album I have ever heard. There is not a note or nuance that is not perfectly judged and deliciously balanced. Its perfection is fascinating. – Simon Napier-Bell (Japan manager, Ultravox, Sinéad O’Connor, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page)

“’Deep Cycles’ sounds fantastic. Great vocal performance!” – Ronald Prent (producer/mixer The Police, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds)

“JUST is a master at looking at life from new perspectives. On ‘Deep Cycles’ he sings straight from the heart with a thrilling arrangement. It makes me curious for the rest of the album. – Geert van Itallie (Paradiso Amsterdam)

Here’s what the press said about “Deep Cycles”:

“Heartwarming emotions wrapped in atmospheric 80s sounds” – OOR

“‘Deep Cycles’ is full of rich, dynamic textures” – HIFI Magazine

Justin also recently performed on Held By Trees’ album ‘Solace’, an album ‘in the spirit of’ Talk Talk featuring seven musicians who have played on Talk Talk’s last two albums. Giving nothing but the sound of waves and the tonality of C# major, Justin created a soulful guitar part that found its way to the track “Wave Upon Wave”. Alongside blues legend Eric Bibb and ambient producer Peter Moon aka Unknown Replica. “Consolation” entered the UK indie chart at number 12 on April 29.

Here’s what Held By Trees producer David Joseph has to say about “Deep Cycles”: “‘Deep Cycles’ is a melancholic yet uplifting work of vulnerability and courage.”

On May 13, 2022, “Deep Cycles” will be released internationally on vinyl in partnership with music distributor Coast To Coast and UK online store Mellotone.net.
